The Best Picnic Spots Near Minneapolis + Local Grab & Go Essentials

Minneapolis shines in the summer, and there’s nothing quite like a leisurely picnic to soak it all in. Whether you’re looking for river views, shaded lawns, or a tucked-away gem that feels like a mini escape, there’s a perfect patch of grass waiting for you. As a local real estate expert who lives and works in the heart of the city, I’ve curated a few of my favorite picnic spots — paired with neighborhood eateries that make packing a picnic basket refreshingly simple.

Here’s where to go when you want the ideal picnic atmosphere and good food:

Lake Harriet Bandshell

Where: Southwest Minneapolis
Vibe: Classic Minneapolis summer energy — families, music, sailboats, and shaded lawns with a lake breeze.
Local Pick-Up: Le Burger 4304 in Linden Hills
Order This: Their juicy namesake burger, the roast chicken plate, or a seasonal salad. Add an order of their airy puffed gougeres (think: mini cheese popovers) for a shareable treat.
Tip: Grab your food, and head Easts to the lake via 43rd Street through leafy Linden Hills, and snag a shady spot near the Bandshell.

Prefer a bite right on the lake? Bread & Pickle is a convenient win.

Bonus: you might catch a free evening concert.

Graco Park (NE Riverfront)

Where: Northeast Minneapolis
Vibe: Tucked away and serene — perfect for a peaceful riverside lunch without the bustle of Boom Island or St. Anthony Main.
Local Pick-Up: Surdyk’s Cheese Shop + Walk-Up Window
Order This: A curated cheese and charcuterie box, baguette, and a couple of their grab-and-go sides all delicious. Add sparkling water or a specialty soda from the cooler.
Tip: There’s limited shade while the trees fill in at this new park, so bring an umbrella or hat. It’s a great spot for sunset with a skyline view.

To cool down: Pickup a healthy frozen treat at Parcelle right across the street from Surdyk's. Our team's favorite is the blueprint organic smoothie.

Wabun Picnic Area at Minnehaha Falls

Where: Near Minnehaha Regional Park
Vibe: Sprawling grassy spaces with plenty of shade and views of the creek — ideal for bigger groups or a quiet solo picnic after a bike ride.
Local Pick-Up: Sea Salt Eatery (seasonal, lines can be long — go early or call ahead if you can!)
Order This: A shrimp or catfish po’ boy, plus fries and an iced tea. They also have rotating specials with fresh seafood.
Tip: Bring a blanket to lounge along the creek if the picnic tables are full. After lunch, follow the path down to the base of the falls for a post-meal stroll.

If you don't mind a 5-minute drive or quick bike ride to order your food, go with a delicious artisanal grilled cheese from All Square, a socially conscious eatery that does not disappoint on flavor.

Theodore Wirth Lake Beach Area

Where: Wirth Park, west of downtown
Vibe: Feels like you're all the way up north, but you’re really only 10 minutes from downtown. Shaded spots, sandy beach, and a forested escape from the city buzz.
Local Pick-Up: Just about anything from Graze Food Hall by Travail nearby in the North Loop
Order This: From fried chicken at Caja to delicious chef crafted bowls from Graze on the Green, a handheld delight from Wrap, and so much more
Tip: There are picnic tables by the beach and more secluded clearings along the trails if you want a quieter spot.

Bde Maka Ska (East Side near Thomas Beach)

Where: Chain of Lakes, Uptown side
Vibe: Open green lawns, big sky views, and people-watching with a side of paddleboards.
Local Pick-Up: Black Walnut Bakery
Order This: From abundant pastry delights to simple and delicious sandwich options and whole loaves available daily, the cafe-style bakery is the perfect grab-and-go option.
Tip: Go early or weeknights to beat the crowds.

Panoway on Wayzata Bay

Where: Lake Street, Wayzata
Vibe: Lakeside luxury meets small-town charm. Strollable, scenic, and sparkling with sailboats — perfect for a sunset dinner picnic or a laid-back lakeside lunch.
Local Pick-Up: The Grocer’s Table – grab a meal or provisions from the counter or deli case.
Order This: Our favorite is always the seasonal salad. Add a house-made dessert and a refreshing drink for the perfect day.
Tip: Head to the green just east of the docks or find a bench along the walking path for front-row views of the lake and steady people-watching. Free public parking is available!

Final Thoughts
Summer in Minneapolis is short — but so sweet. Whether you’re celebrating a successful closing, taking time to explore a new neighborhood, or simply looking to slow down with some good food and good views, a picnic is the perfect excuse to unplug and appreciate where we live.

And if you’re curious about what it would be like to live near one of these amazing green spaces — let’s talk. I’d love to help you find a home that lets you step out the door and into nature.
